RECENTLY QUALIFIED ACCOUNTANTS
MANAGING YOUR SEARCH IN A TIGHTER JOBS MARKET

As everyone is aware, the employment market for recently qualified accountants is exceptionally difficult at the moment. The job’s market now is similar to that of the early 90s. The difference between the market of the early 90s and the current market being that back in the 90s recently qualified accountants knew their fate and were mentally prepared for the challenge. In contrast until recently, newly qualified accountants were in strong demand and in many instances had their pick of opportunities. This makes the current market even more difficult.

Set out below are some tips on how to manage your search in this changed environment:

Be Prepared

  • Preparation is key.
  • Take time preparing your CV – it should be clear and concise and highlight all relevant details (for CV advice and sample CVs click here).

Be Realistic & Flexible

  • The market is much tighter now than it has been in many years. As a result it is important to be realistic both in terms of the role itself and also your salary expectations.
  • Consider contract opportunities – contracts can offer excellent exposure to new areas enabling you to increase your knowledge base and practical experience. Contracts can often lead to permanent opportunities either directly or through new contacts made. It is often easier to find a job while in a job.
  • Don’t price yourself out of the market – with the market much more competitive than before don’t allow a small monetary amount result in you missing out on a worthwhile opportunity.

Work with a Reputable Recruiter

  • The market is tight; however a good recruiter will be able to help you focus your search in the areas where you are most likely to find success. Many roles are not advertised externally so it is important to have someone you trust who is keeping you in mind for such roles and where appropriate making proactive approaches on your behalf.

Use your Network

  • Be sure to use your network when job searching – many roles come about through word of mouth. A personal recommendation is always a strong form of introduction.

Be ready for Interview

  • An interview is an opportunity for you to sell yourself and to put forward what you can bring to a role.
  • Be prepared for obvious questions (click here for some examples).
  • If possible run through a mock interview with a friend.
  • Make a list of key skills / achievements that you want to get across in the interview – make sure to work these into your answers!
  • Research the company – you should be familiar with its financials and all recent press announcements.
  • Have some questions prepared should they give you an opportunity for questions at the end.

Be Patient and Keep Focused

  • Job searching in a slow market is frustrating. Try to remain positive and patient. There are opportunities – they are just less plentiful and take longer to find than before.
